Probably the most important proof of reincarnation is the life of Siddhartha Buddha. See: Buddha: Atheist or God? ![]() Suffice it to say here that it is Buddha's teachings about Atman that makes it appear that he taught rebirth and not reincarnation. He achieved retro- cognitive powers. Here is one of his past life stories. The officer little thinking of the pain he inflicted upon others, obeyed; but when the victim of the king's wrath begged for mercy, he felt compassion and laid the whip lightly upon him. Now the king was reborn as Devadatta, who was abandoned by all his followers, because they were no longer willing to stand his severity and he died miserable and full of penitence. The officer is the sick bhikkhu, who having often given offence to his brethren in the vihara was left without assistance in his distress. The eminent man, however, who was unjustly beaten and begged for mercy was the Bodhisatta; he has been reborn as the Tathagata. It is now the lot of the Tathagata to help the wretched officer as he had mercy on him. The Pali Jatakas record 3. Buddhism Quotes on Buddha / Buddhism Religion. I will teach you the Truth and the Path leading to the Truth. Question: I have heard the phrase “If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him!” many times. Can you explain this? Answer: It actually comes from an old koan. Nagarjuna (c. 250) Often referred to as "the second Buddha" by Tibetan and East Asian Mahayana (Great Vehicle) traditions of Buddhism, Nagarjuna offered. Buddha - A Hero's Journey to Nirvana : This article describes the transition of king Siddhartha - an ordinary human being - to Gautam Buddha - the hero of the. For Buddhists, the biography of the Buddha consists of not one but many lives. Buddha Shakyamuni spent many lifetimes in the six realms of transmigration. His lives as the monkey king, elephant king, deer king, and goose king are examples of lives spent in the realm of animals. One time, after Sundari, the courtesan, made a defamatory accusation against him, the Buddha explained how actions from a previous life can effect the shaping of events in one's present life. Pure Eyes and Deer Form entered into a sexual liaison with each other. Without Buddha I Could Not Be A Christian SparknotesHe was tied to the back of a donkey and publicly paraded through the streets. A new investigation established Pure Eyes' guilt. Pure Eyes was executed by arrow and then beheaded. On the very night of his enlightenment, during the first watch, the Buddha developed retro- cognitive knowledge which enabled him to read his past lives. He beheld the . The textual references conclusively prove that the Buddha did not borrow this stern truth of rebirth from any existing source, but spoke from personal knowledge, a knowledge which was super- normal, developed when he achieved enlightenment and which could be developed by others as well. In his first paean of joy, the Buddha says: . Sorrow full indeed is birth again and again. Now there is no more rebirth. The Anathapindikovada Sutta describes a nocturnal visit of Anathapindika to the Buddha, immediately after his rebirth as a Deva. In the Anguttara Nikaya,' the Buddha alludes to a past birth as Pacetana the wheelwright. In the samyutta Nikaya the Buddha cites the names of some Buddha's who preceded him. An unusual direct reference to departed ones appears in the Parinibbana Sutta. The Venerable Ananda desired to know from the Buddha the future state of several persons who had died in a particular village. The Buddha patiently described their destinies. Such instances could easily be multiplied from the Tipitaka to show that the Buddha did expound the doctrine of rebirth as a verifiable truth..

On the other hand, Jenkins was patiently waiting for the arrival of the all new, second generation 1. Chevrolet Camaro which was reportedly delayed due to UAW strike issues. Then in 2. 00. 3, mid west musclecar collector Mike Guarise spotted an ad offering the car for sale. He was also hard to get hold of, and a little cantankerous when you did get hold of him. I strongly suspect that was the reason why I was the only bidder. I told him that I would be glad to make an offer on the car. However, I would need to have a letter of certification from Bill Jenkins that it was indeed his old race car. With letter of authentication firmly in hand, the deal was quickly concluded. Mike brought the car home, and started the restoration process shortly thereafter. Not only does Mike Guarise have a letter of authenticity on file (which we've seen), he also has Bill Jenkins signature on the cowl! By now, many of you may be wondering how after all those years of use, and abuse, was Bill Jenkins able to authenticate the car? I believe that the car had sat from the time Zul parked it. Number one, he (Jenkins) was familiar with SRD's work, and the SRD sub frame and coil- over rear suspension which they had installed. Number two, when Zul had raced the car in the later body style, he had cut out the rear window opening to accommodate the much larger later- model Camaro back window. There also had been a patch installed to fill that area in, so he immediately recognized where the window had been cut out. The car had also been acid dipped which was another way Jenkins could tell it was his old race car. There were also no top bows for the headliner as well as no structural support in the roof area which is another way he could tell that it was his car. And the A& A fiberglass dash installed when Bruce Larsen campaigned the car was also still there! The intake is a Weiand 2x. Holley 7. 50's. Also on board is a '6. Corvette tach- drive, dual- point distributor, Hooker headers, and a Hemi Mopar Super Stock aluminum fan. It's all there! During the lengthy restoration process, which began at Wonder Lake Auto Body in July, 2. Bob Kroening, Mike spoke to Jenkins on several occasions. I decided that the best thing to do was to write up a list of ten questions, and leave enough room at the bottom of each question for him to give me an answer. That seemed to work the best! Basically, what's in there now is a code . It also has the correct heads, and the Weiand vintage tunnel ram with . We even went as far as to obtain the correct 1. Corvette tach- drive distributor that Bill originally used on the car. Another hard- to- find- item was the Hemi Super Stock 1. In the process of restoring this car, we have attempted to get everything as technically correct as possible. For example, although the HOT ROD MAGAZINE article lists the 2x. Edelbrock, that association was short lived. In its place, Guarise has installed the more commonly used Weiand 2x. The black vinyl interior in the Camaro is also original NOS as is the ultra rare Stahl tachometer. The three- point Lakewood roll bar is also technically correct. Both front and rear Cragar S/S wheels are period correct as well as the Stahl front tires and Goodyear drag slicks on the rear. But what did Bill, . Now, he also pointed out a couple of things that I had messed up on like the inline Hurst shifter for example, so I'm now in the process of fixing those things. Interviews archive at Tadias Magazine Physician and author Abraham Verghese. From fascinating social and political portraits of Ethiopia in upheaval, Cutting for Stone zooms into a territory where few have gone before: the drama of the operating theater and the mysteries inside the human body. There can be no doubt that this novel is the work of a seasoned writer who has led many lives in many places. Time and again, Dr. Verghese has dipped heavily into his own life for furnishing the material for his writing. Later, in The Tennis Partner: A Story of Friendship and Loss, he described a beloved friend’s struggle with drug addiction, rendering a poetic, raw tribute to male friendships. In his latest book and first novel, Cutting for Stone, the protagonist is a young doctor, raised in Ethiopia, who seeks his fortune in America. Verghese’s own career as a physician in the United States has taken him from his grueling days as a foreign medical graduate (recounted in The New Yorker article, The Cowpath to America) to becoming the voice of empathetic medicine. As founding director of Center for Medical Humanities & Ethics at the University of Texas and in his current role as a senior professor at Stanford University, Dr. Verghese is a champion in the field of Medical Humanities. He is passionate about bedside medicine and physical examination and values the human element that these rituals bring to the facelessness of modern medicine. In an exclusive interview, Tadias Magazine spoke with Abraham Verghese about writing, medicine, the healthcare crisis, and how to lead double lives. Abraham Verghese (photo by Joanne Chan)Can you begin by telling us a bit about all the different places that are a part of you? My identification with place is complicated. Ethnically, I feel very much Indian. My parents are Indian and I feel very conscious of their legacy, But countrywise, I strongly identify with Ethiopia, having grown up there. And then of course, America is the place that welcomes everybody. So this is home unequivocally, and I am very proud to be American. So there are all these different threads that run through my life. I remember the passage in the book where Hema speaks of Addis as an evolving city whereas Madras seems to have finished evolving. Was that something that struck you as a primary difference between both places? Yes, when I went to India and lived in Madras, that was one of the things that struck me about the city. Traditions and ways of life were very established in Madras whereas so much was in transition in Addis. And then when I came to America, it was very different again. There’s a scene later in the book where Marion arrives in America and feels completely unprepared for the scale and scope of America. You also show how, even through its upheavals, Addis was a cosmopolitan city of the twentieth century. You help the reader picture the different peoples who had congregated in Addis. Can you give us a sense of your relationship with Addis? I don’t have any family in Addis but I do have friends there and I have strong connections to the medical world in Ethiopia. Hundreds of articles about spell casting and magic. Read the proclamations made by US presidents from 2000 till 2016. Verbatim official mother's day proclamations. Also, the present Prime Minister of Ethiopia was a medical student one year behind me. When civil war broke out and the military took over the medical school, he became a guerilla fighter and I left. So I have been back twice – once to do an interview with him for a magazine and the other time for a medical symposium. Could you tell us something about your writing process? You must have drawn a lot on your memories of growing up in Ethiopia but it is also clear you did a lot of research on Ethiopian history and politics. I think the research happens in parallel with the writing. I was consciously trying to learn more about the Italian time in Ethiopia because it was a very colorful legacy. Every colonial power leaves their stamp on their country and we are very familiar with the English stamp on India or the French stamp on Cameroon but the Italian stamp on Ethiopia is not very well- known. So I spent a lot of time on that. But the research was in parallel with the writing because as I wrote I would stumble on something that I needed to know more about and so that would set me off in another direction. One of the great joys of research is that you find unexpected things in unexpected places. You are looking for one article but you find another right next to it that leads you to include something you might never have otherwise written about. There’s a lot of serendipity. Elsewhere you talked about the incremental method of writing in which you write a little bit everyday. 09/03/2017: the moment life changed for a japanese kamikaze pilot; 09/03/2017: churches taking 'next steps' in fight over mandatory abortion funding. Two Minute Apologetics. Below are some quick answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ's) that Catholics get. What does the word "apologetics" mean? Solomon Mulugeta Kassa is the Producer and Host of the 'TechTalk with Solomon' television show on Ethiopia Broadcasting Services (EBS). 1 I celebrate myself, and sing myself, And what I assume you shall assume, For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you. I loafe and invite my soul. I think I was talking about the incremental method of doing anything. If you do a little of something every day, you gradually get better at it. Instead of finding great blocks of time, you just have to find a little time every day. So do you have a daily writing practice? Not really. I write whenever I can and sometimes it winds up being everyday for several days at a stretch of time but sometimes I cannot get to it every day. I also heard that you have a room on the campus, something like a secret bunker, where you can go and write. ![]() Traditional Catholic teachings and sermons from the Council of Trent. Well, everybody here has protected time to do their research and so during my protected time, instead of going to a lab and doing experiments, I go to my lab and conduct my kind of experiments. In fiction, nonfiction. In any kind of writing, really. How important is it as a writer to have a place for writing? I actually don’t think it is very important. I think people make much too much of having a place and how it has to be just right. I can actually write anywhere and often do. The most important thing when you are trying to write is to simply sit down and try to write, it doesn’t matter where. If you are waiting for the right environment before you can write, then you are probably not prepared to write. What would you say is the unlikeliest place that you have written in?(Laughs) Probably airports. Everyone’s waiting to take off and frustrated that we are late or whatever and I am barely aware that anything is going on. Pico Iyer talks about airports as the ultimate postmodern metropolis. He probably gets a lot of writing done in airports as well. I am not surprised. He travels a whole lot more than I do. In fact, in his book Global Soul, he talks about a new generation of transnationals who belong to so many cultures that they belong to nowhere. He calls them Nowherians, or fulltime citizens of nowhere. Do you think you are a global soul? I feel I am not completely a global soul. I have sequential interactions with different countries and even within the US, I have steadily migrated from Tennessee to Iowa to Texas to California now. I hope this is the last stop. I hope I am not destined to go to Guam and Hawaii! But even when our migrations are sequential, our memories are not, right? Yes, very true. They are seamless and overlapping and the only constant is you. You are the only one linking the different places. There is that beautiful passage in the book where you talk about how listening to Tizita takes the narrator right back to Ethiopia, whether he is in Adams Morgan or in Khartoum. Yes, music is so mysterious that way in its connection to the brain and its ability to transform us. We all probably have a song that can transport us back to a different part of our life. And it is very difficult to make that song come alive for someone else us. I could not bring the song to the reader but I could try to bring that sense of identification, the nostalgia that it evoked. And of course, that song . I worried a great deal about whether I could pull it off. But we all have our tizitas, our songs of some kind. To get back to the subject of medicine and writing. You speak in this book as well as in interviews about the ritual of examining the patient. Examining the patient is a lot like reading, isn’t it, with the patient as the text? Yes, but it’s also much more than that. At one level the patient is a text to decode, a mystery to unravel, and that is certainly important, it’s the most attractive part of being a diagnostician. But this is not a natural relationship, between the doctor and the patient. In fact, it is terribly unnatural. They are coming to you because they are in some sort of distress and you are meeting them because you have made this career choice to help people and so it’s a very strange relationship and even though it seems routine, there is nothing routine about it. Its’ really quite loaded. So after you meet them and decode the text, you are, by your presence, by your engagement, providing the kind of comfort no one else can provide. The analogy I use is “when you are drowning, the only person who can save you is someone who knows how to swim”. I find it terribly important to be conscious of that dynamic, even if the patient is not. Somebody else once described this by saying “one of our roles is to save the patient from their nihilistic tendencies.” A sick individual’s instinct is taking him or her towards nihilism, to imagine that the world is cruel, that there is nothing worth living for, and the doctor’s job is to counter that. Have there been other writers who write about medicine whom you count among your influences? There are a lot of writers who write well about the business of medicine. Atul Gawande for instance. And I have always admired that kind of writing. I guess that’s my bias. If I manage to get you to enter the world of the novel and completely forget your everyday life, you don’t just find out about medicine, you live medicine. You live it through Hema, you live it through Ghosh, through Marion, and you come out at the other end and its 2. The AP report noted while its reporters were able to access the sites via boat, the Environmental Protection Agency was not on scene, and did not provide a timeline for when its staff would be able to visit them. Now the EPA, which is under the control of Donald Trump appointee and longtime EPA hater Scott Pruitt, has fired back with one of the administration’s favorite tactics: smearing the messenger. In an extraordinary statement that appeared on the agency’s website on Sunday, the EPA called the AP report “misleading” and attacked Biesecker’s “audacity” and credibility.“Here’s the truth: through aerial imaging, EPA has already conducted initial assessments at 4. Superfund sites—2. EPA wrote. Notably, the EPA tried to bury that its “initial assessment” was conducted with “aerial images,” not actual on- site assessments, and that the agency had failed to visit at least 1. Superfund sites as of Saturday. That is completely in line with the original AP report.“Administrator Pruitt already visited Southeast Texas and is in constant contact with local, state and county officials,” the statement continued. Additionally, the Oklahoman took him to task for sensationalized reporting.”(Biesecker did not make up the story, which is that Pruitt met with Dow CEO Andrew Liveris before deciding not to ban Dow’s chlorpyrifos pesticide, but instead issued a correction regarding the length of said meeting.)In a followup statement, EPA Associate Administrator Liz Bowman claimed the AP was “once again” attempting to “mislead Americans” by “cherry- picking facts,” and slammed the report as “yellow journalism.” The statement also links to far- right website Breitbart, one of the president’s favorite websites. Since the EPA did not actually contest any of the facts in the AP article, this looks an awful lot like petty retaliation against journalists for having the temerity to report on things like the EPA’s response to an environmental catastrophe—or any number of other things, like Pruitt’s extremely sketchy ties to the climate change denial movement, war on environmental science or plans to eliminate huge numbers of EPA staff. Going after reporters might please the big, stupid and extremely petty man in the Oval Office. But that’s precisely because responding to bad publicity by doubling down and smearing critics is the way a child would handle things. Never mind the toxic waste potentially spread all around Houston—a bunch of Trump appointees’ egos are the real victims here. Update, 7: 4. 0pm: On Sunday evening, the original statement on the EPA website became inaccessible. ![]() Though the timing appeared to correlate with a temporary outage of the entire EPA website, when the website came back online minutes later, the statement still read “Page Not Found (Restricted).”Other EPA press releases continued to load normally. Obviously, removing the statement from the website—if indeed that is what happened, rather than a technical error—would do nothing to mask the fact the EPA wrote it in the first place. An archived version of the statement is available here. Update, September 4th, 2: 4. The statement is again visible on the EPA website. Education World: Caught in the Digital Divide. A survey conducted by The Public Policy Institute of California found that even in California, a hot bed of technology, only 3. Hispanic people accessed the Internet compared to 6. According to Evans Craig, of the Albuquerque High Performance Computing Center in New Mexico, the divide also affects Native Americans. In The Native Digital Divide: A Review of Online Literature, a study of the divide in the southwestern United States, Craig states, . Only one- fourth of the homes on the Navajo Reservation have phone service. According to some estimates, extending phone lines to existing homes in the area would cost more than $1. Even if digital centers were installed, Craig points out, access to the RGC would do the Navajo no good. The divide also affects rural areas of the country. It has the same chassis as the plastic and Catalin versions. The radio plays well with great sound. Nice solid Canadian radio. Add $2. 8 for domestic shipping. This seldom found plastic model is cute as a button with a crisp dial and gorgeous marbleized knobs. It's also rather unique because the entire cabinet is a single molded piece sitting on top of the metal chassis. That allowed the designers to carve a convenient carry handle into the back and eliminate the usual flimsy cardboard back. Oddly, this radio has no dial lamp for illuminating the dial at nighttime. This radio weighs 6 pounds and measures 1. Waffle grille has matching original Admiral waffle imprint knobs. Dial face and pointer in good shape. There is a small scratch in the right hand corner of the radio (you can barely see it in the photo). Chassis has been serviced, looks and plays well. Has original back on it. Please ask for more photos. The chassis has been gone through. When turned on it plays and sounds good. No cracks or scratches. Please look at the photo, email me with any questions. It just has a little . The plastic is flawless. The box is included too with accessories shown. Just a few scratches here and there. The radio only emits static, usually indicative of needing a re- cap. Includes the leather case in amazing condition plus the earphone. Works well, loud and clear on most stations but not all the way across the dial. No cracks or chips or dents or hairlines and minimal scratches. Interestingly, only very small 9 volt batteries fit in this beauty. I've included one that works to keep it simple. The box is in decent shape, insert is in poor shape but holds the leather cases (nice shape) in there. Regardless, it's unusual. Radio picks up static but that's all. It's really clean with no cracks or chips or hairlines. Grille has a super hard to notice dimple but it's almost not worth mentioning to be honest. Bottom label is missing, so determining the model number required some research. One tiny chip can be seen in the photos. A four- tube superheterodyne, it has reasonable sensitivity, and would be a perfect ballgame or news/talk radio for a kitchen, workshop, or garage. The four- tube design might have only marginal performance in a basement unless you are in an area with good signal strength. There is no provision for an external antenna. It has been fully serviced (new capacitors, resistors checked, tubes tested and replaced as necessary, and aligned). Color is actually pale pink. No scratches or cracks. Marks on the gold area on top are part of the design (not scratches). Electronics restored (filter caps replaced). AC plug marked for polarized input. Reception is good. Cabinet on this very small radio is in excellent condition. Dial scale has been replaced along with capacitors, weak tubes and the power cord. The chassis has been properly restored with a new power cord. It plays just as great as it looks. This radio weighs 6 pounds and measures 1. It almost looks like new! Very stylish post- War radio made for Montgomery Wards. A lot of these were sold in the suburbs of the Northeast. Add $2. 8 for domestic shipping. Was $1. 79. 0. 0, now $1. A sonic surprise is that the speaker faces out the left side, even though the wraparound grille would suggest it should face forward like many other radios of this general design. The Bakelite cabinet is in very nice conditions, with no chips, cracks, or significant scratches. There are a few flakes of graphics missing from the reverse painted glass dial, but it doesn't look bad. The chassis is a classic . Restoration included replacement of all electrolytic and paper capacitors, new resistors where needed, a strong set of tubes, a full RF and IF alignment, a new dial light bulb, a new polarized power cord with rewiring of the power switch circuit for reduced shock hazard, and installation of a fuse and fuse holder for improved overall safety. This is a radio you can use every day and count on for good reliability for many years. Being relatively small and light, this radio will be fairly inexpensive to ship. There are separate dial windows for tone and volume, plus it has a tuning strength indicator window at the top. The sound from this baby's Jensen speaker is awesome! Strong and clean. Doors close to protect to the dial and grille area. The radio has been beautifully refinished. It has period replacement grille cloth, but retains the original knobs. The chassis is clean and complete with the original speaker. The chassis has been serviced and plays well, receiving both AM and Short Wave with a longer wire. The factory was Wells- Gardner, who made terrific radios, and this was made exclusively for Montgomery Wards. The radio is a sophisticated eight- tube super- het that plays on AM and SW. There are quite a number of deluxe features to detail. Note the tone controls and the highly detailed multi- colored dial which measure a huge 9 inches. The radio sports a brand new eye tube, which winks with great sensitivity as you tune from station to station. Les has done his completely professional repairs and between the highly sophisticated engineering and the massively sized cabinet, the radios sings like few others. The cabinet retains the original finish, very acceptable with only a subtle blemish on the top right side near the back (see photo). Built on a chrome chassis, with some accumulation of tarnish this is one of the finest playing table radios you could wish to own. This set because of size and weight is going to cost more in shipping. The scale of this radio makes it ideal for the installed mini- jack and as with all of my radios Bluetooth is available for $2. The cabinet is in wonderful condition with no chips or cracks. Chassis has been serviced and plays well across the entire dial. The tuning eye has been replaced and is very strong. The radio sports a . Tuning the radio was done in a telephone way, turning the dial and also with a more tradition tuning knob. This radio was very well made using both striped mahogany and exotic black mahogany on the central and curved side. The two tone effect is stunning. The cabinet has been refinished in a fine fashion with period correct speaker cloth and factory wood knobs. The six- tube super- het chassis plays in a terrific manner, with the new and super sensitive green tuning eye winking from station to station. The radio is a Broadcast and Shortwave receiver. Les has completed his professional repairs and the set is a fine and sensitive player. Les added a mini- jack to allow your use of any modern input device. Choose your pad, phone or computer and play an unlimited amount of content of your choosing. Bluetooth is available for an additional $2. It has been serviced, tubes and caps replaced as needed. It plays very loud and clear. The eye tube is bright and the dial has a pleasing red glow. Add $3. 8 for domestic shipping. It has been completely gone through and all of the old capacitors have been replaced with new ones, all tubes checked too. The reception is excellent surprisingly strong for such a little set. The Walnut Bakelite case is in very good condition without chips, cracks or scratches. A fairly nice working radio too for such a small set, it brings in stations clear and with plenty of volume. It has several great features not often found in Bakelite table top radios. It features AM and Shortwave bands and has a tuning eye that works great and is bright. This radio has been professionally restored and has been repainted back to its original . All paper and electrolytic capacitors have been replaced. The tubes and resistors have been checked and a new power cord has been installed. A great looking, great playing radio. They bought a wide selection of radios from dozens of factories. Like most retailers, they offered a wide range of price points and different qualities. This model was made for them by Colonial Radio. Colonial was considered a premium factory in the early 1. The radio before you is a early five- tube super- het that offers Broadcast only. The cabinet has been nicely refinished and the speaker cloth is an exact reproduction of the original. Note the ornate metal inset knobs, a striking addition to the classic good looks. Les has completed his highly professional repairs and the radio is a terrific player. Les has added a mini- jack so you can input any modern device. Enjoy listening to content from your phone, pad or computer and enjoy an unlimited choice of content. Bluetooth is available for an additional $2. It does have a tiny pinpoint ding on grille that isn't very obvious but there. Leather case is in fair shape, not bad. It is without cracks or chips but has plenty of shine! The original matching control knobs are excellent. The station control is trimmed in gold- toned metal. Station numerals / logo lettering are molded & without damage. |
